Hotel booking engine: how to take more direct bookings and pay no commission

What OTA commission really costs, why guests book there instead of with you, and the practical changes that bring them to your own booking page.

What a booking engine is

A booking engine is the part of your website where a guest picks dates, sees prices and books a room without leaving your site. It checks live availability, takes the guest's details and sometimes a deposit, and creates the reservation in your system straight away.

It is not the same as a contact form or a WhatsApp number. A form starts a conversation. A booking engine finishes a sale, at two in the morning, while you are asleep.

What OTA commission really costs

OTAs bring guests you would not otherwise reach, and most hotels should use them. But commission is commonly between 15% and 25% of room revenue, depending on the OTA, your contract and any visibility programme you are in, and it is charged on every stay, including repeat guests who already know you.

Worked examplePer month
Room nights booked through OTAs150
Average room rateLKR 18,000
Room revenue from OTAsLKR 2,700,000
Commission at 15%LKR 405,000
Kept if 1 in 5 of those nights came direct insteadLKR 81,000
These figures are an illustration, not a result. Put in your own room nights, average rate and commission to see what direct bookings are worth at your property.

Why guests book on OTAs instead

  • They found you there, and booking in the same place feels easier than looking for your website.
  • Your website has no way to book, only an enquiry form or a phone number.
  • Your booking page is slow, awkward on a phone, or shows prices without explaining taxes and policy.
  • The OTA shows a clear cancellation policy and an instant confirmation, and your site does not.
  • They were not sure the price would be the same or better with you.

What actually moves guests to book direct

  1. 1

Make booking fast on a phone

Most guests search on a phone. Dates, a price and a book button should fit on one screen without zooming.

  2. 2

    Show prices on a calendar

Guests with flexible dates want to see which nights are cheaper without searching one date at a time.

  3. 3

Give a reason to book with you

Breakfast included, a late checkout, a member rate or an upgrade when available. Check your OTA contracts before advertising a lower public price; many hotels reward direct guests with extras instead.

  4. 4

    Be clear about the terms

Show the cancellation policy, deposit and taxes before the guest pays, not after.

  5. 5

    Confirm instantly

An immediate confirmation by email or WhatsApp is what makes a direct booking feel as safe as an OTA one.

  6. 6

    Invite past guests back

A guest who first found you on an OTA can be invited to book directly next time, if they have agreed to hear from you.

Measure it

Three numbers tell you whether it is working: the share of your room revenue that came direct, the commission you paid OTAs this month, and how many direct bookings arrived outside office hours, when nobody would have answered the phone. Check them monthly and compare with the same month last year.

How Orian handles direct bookings

Orian's booking engine sells from the same inventory as your front desk and channel manager, so a direct booking closes the room everywhere in the same action, at 0% commission. Guests pick dates from a month calendar with nightly prices, can use promo codes and add a meal plan, and get an instant confirmation with a link to their stay in the guest app. You can also show an approximate US dollar price beside your own currency for international guests.

The booking page carries your hotel's name, not ours, and the link is yours to put on Instagram, WhatsApp and Google. A report sets what your OTA bookings cost in commission against what came direct.

Common questions

Is a booking engine the same as a website?

No. The website describes your hotel; the booking engine is the part that checks availability and takes the booking. Many hotels add a booking engine to an existing website with a single button or link.

Can I offer a lower price than Booking.com on my own site?

It depends on your OTA contracts and the rules where you operate. Some agreements restrict publicly advertised lower rates. Extras such as breakfast, member rates or a late checkout are a common way to reward direct bookings without a public price difference.

Do direct bookings cost anything?

There is no OTA commission, but card payments usually carry a payment provider's fee, and some booking engines charge per booking. Orian does not charge commission on direct bookings.

Will guests trust booking directly?

They trust a fast page, a clear policy and an instant confirmation. Showing your cancellation terms up front and confirming straight away does more than any badge.
